Sunday.

Snapshot taken in same street as last tuesday. Quite suberb mid (?) 17th century window.

Yesterday was the last day of the art exhibition. Stewarded on the entry ticket desk from 3p.m. to 5pm. Fairly active, but found time to complete Telegraph prize crossword. Then helped Hilary, who came in at 4p.m. and sat at the desk behind me (raffle tickets) with the Telegraph General Knowledge crossword. Did just over half of it by chucking out time. The problem with a general knowledge crossword is that you either know the answer or you don't. With a cryptic crossword the answer can usually be worked out (with application). Still - good fun and keeps the grey matter active.

Today Morning Service and a couple of baptisms. Sang in choir. Ann was a server. After service had coffee then ran Barbara home. Home, lunch, changed into scruff and been in workshop since; oddjobs, and tidying up an unusually small brass tinder box, probably for a child - even the fire steel is tiny (an inch and a half long)-case hardened it and now it sparks. Stopped for supper, quick blog, and now bed beckons. Goodnight all.

Hi Mike,
When case-hardening do you quench in salt? I'm sure I've used oil and water on different occasions in the past, and I've heard mammalian blood is effective - but that seems a strange way to over-cook black-pudden!

Hi Carl. For a fire steel I always quench in cold water. It gives a really hard finish. Springs are quenched in oil (I think. It's a while since I made one) - They're traditionally tempered in whale oil.
