Tuesday.

These two characters are (or when completed will  become)  clock jacks. That is  misleading. There is only one of  him, and I hope he willl  become a clock jack.   I'm putting  them up mainly for the information of daughter  Ruth, who  was in at the  beginning so knows about him. As you can see Roo, he is  progressing nicely.  especially the tricorn hat. Lots to be done still, but he is, I think, off to a good start.

Thursday (2)

Snapshot taken of old houses in Stone Street on Tuesday morning.

Thursday.

Snapshot taken from our bedroom window at about 3 a.m. onTuesday morning (in the  midddle of a very dramatic  thunder storm; plus summer lightning/sheet lightning)  It kept us all awake (on and off) until a final flurry at about five in the morning.

Wednesday.

The above is a photo taken in Stoke by Nayland yesterday on (or rather just off) our drive to Sudbury.   It's a handsome village with a lovely church. Got a bit lost in the lanes, but  eventually drove home via Scotland (see previous entry).

Tuesday.

Had a drive round this morning. Took above photo  on  the way home (next village to  us) very good pub in photo. Landlord  a most obliging bloke, but not going into  details because you'd all flock there, and I wouldn't be able to  get in.

This  is known in  the area as Scotland (Can see how it got the name, although it's a bit more civilised than that, really).

Monday.

Snapshot taken a  few minutes ago in the rose  garden; of S.R.G.D. (Senior resident grand daughter) teaching the roses how to put the best face on things.

Saturday.

Above Photo is of Ann sorting through some old tatting. Senior Resident Granddaughter thinks she may be able to get enough out of it to make a lace blouse. Knowing her skills she will probably be able to.

Yesterday an old school friend of Ruth's motored up from her father's home on the Suffolk coast, where she has been staying. It was lovely to see her again. She lives  and works in Yorkshire these days,  It was good to see her again, and reassuring to hear her cries of "none of you have changed a bit."
This said a great deal about her good manners (but, I'm afraid, very little about her common honesty).  Still - we all enjoyed her visit immensely, and she'd changed very little from the schoolgirl of thirty years (or so ago, who we all remembered.

Being called for lunch now - More later (perhaps).

Monday.

Senior resident grand daughter did the above pencil sketch of meself a few days ago. I intended taking it down to 'the Frame Store', and having it framed, but S.R. G.D. dissuaded me, and found the above oak frame, then framed and presented  me with the picture. We love it!  The grandchildren are generally very gifted.

Sunday.

Senior resident grand daughter spent part of today making the above photographed hat she is wearing in the photos - it is reversible, so, in effect she made two hats today. Clever dressmaker, isn't she?   The hats (?) look very cool and summery.  She didn't work to a pattern either, just worked from a paper drawing she made first.

Thursday.

The other day young Tim (Ann's youngest brother) motored over from near King's Lynn and spent the day with us. He is shown at the left of the above photo.  He is a silversmith. It was good to see him.

Tuesday.

A plethora of  thrushes.   I seem to remember a 'tongue twister' about "thirty three feathers on  a  feathered thrushes throat". Does anyone else remember it?

Monday.

Hello Crowbard. The young lady at the  right of the picture is Elsa. Will probably add to  this  tomorrow.

Sunday, 7 July 2019

Sunday.

Above is a Swedish savoury sandwich cake. The Swedish contingent made it to celebrate Great Grandaughter Elsa's fifth birthday (which we were celebrating -  along with our  anuual family get-together),  Our friends Ross and Simon Cook (very aptly named)  did the catering  generally (all were very impressed with the above, delicious, savoury cake). Being told of the imminence of breakfast-so morelater perhaps.

Friday.

Senior resident grand daughter went into town this afternoon and purchased this rather posh yoyo at a newsagen'ts shop. It does all sorts of clever things, which she has already mastered. I had one of these things towards the end of the last war. I was taught to use it by an elderly uncle who'd had one at about the time of the Boer War. They are a toy that has been invented and reinvented since the eighteeth century. Anyway - a  good deal of fun was had with it.

Thursday.

Went for a  short walk today (Ruth in  charge of  the  camera, etc (me, that is)..  Haven't walked for a while so - progress of a sort.

Wednesday.

Resident Grand daughter spent  part of  this  afternoon painting the above roses from the  garden.  The result is  to the left of the picture. She (like her  mother and sister)  is a  very  good artist.  We have a good many of their pictures about the house, which we both enjoy.

We are having a  family get -together this week (more pictures (I hope)tomorrow. ) This replaces our usual expedition on  the Cam.  There should  be about seventeen of us we think. Should be fun.

More in a day or so, we hope.

Monday.

Above and below photographs  are of  a young thrush which is, I think, helping its parents to raise  a second brood of fledgelings. We both love the  idea of thrushes around the garden.  They have been in very short supply over the last year or so, so we're both keeping our fingers crossed that these youngsters  make it.

'That's the wise thrush -
he sings his  song thrice over,
lest you should think he never could recapture
that first fine careless rapture.

Ode to autumn, I think ?????????
