As I child I always longed for a secret garden ala the book. This is how I imagine the gate to such a garden would look.

Yes, the garden behind this gate is lovely. There are three gates like this to the garden, only one of them in use. The garden consists of nearly two acres, mainly of lawns, hedges, and rather overgrown old rose beds, sweeping down to the river, with lots of secluded nooks. If you can go back to my entry for 27th July last, there are a couple of snapshots taken in this garden.

Reminds me of Holman Hunt's "Light of the World" Don't know why.
Had to comment as my WV is dinge which is the direct opposite.

Yes, that gateway always reminds me of the painting; perhaps it's the ivy growing across it. I also took a close-up of the gate, and that reminds me even more of the painting.
