House of pre- tudor ( circa 1480 ish) brick work about a hundred and fifty yards from here. Lovely looking old place, but told by a friend that it's not in the least convenient inside (?????). Very convenient for town centre though, I should think.
Not got itchy feet though, I assure all my readers. Still very much enjoying the convenience of modern bungalow living.

Yes, isn't it? It's changed hands a good deal recently. As you correctly guess, the 'turrett' contains a spiral staircase. We've been told that the first floor at the top of the staircase, contains not several bedrooms, but one large open floor space. Must try and find out a bit more. The problem is that most 'historians' in the area are far more interested in timber framed buildings
than early brickwork. Still, I know one specialist brickologist in town, so will question him about the place next time I see him.
I'm sure the Estate Agents would be pleased to fill you in on its history if you mentioned that you might care to view it, Mike.
Could it have originally had an open external stair to the upper solar, later bricked comfortably into the interior?
Dear Crowbard. We are very much a 'wool town', and it is said of many of our earlier houses were wool merchant's homes with the upper floors used as store rooms for wool, so you may have a point.
My goodness! I look away for a moment and there you are - ensconced in a lovely new home looking as if you have been there for years. How hard you must have worked. Lovely to see photos of Ruth and her beautiful daughter.
I met my tame brickologist in town this morning. He says the house under discussion has fascinated him for years. Largely because it is timber framed, built in the 14th century, then brick surfaced in the late 15th century. It is most unusually built. He will try and find out more about it, and will pass it on.

Hello Pat. It's a bit of a story. Last May I had a nasty fall in our old house, and bust a hip. The old house being medieval, was full of unexpected steps , so we swapped over (got lucky) and wound up here. The youngsters were marvelous (incredibly helpful, all of them). Knew they'd come in useful, if we kept them long enough. Been an eventful year though, and here we are in a modern bungalow, Nice and warm, too.
On Google Earth this house is under renovation. I sent a picture of it to Mum. It's interesting to see how it's changed :)
