brass candle stick on a crocheted or tatted doily on a wooden candle-stand which probably has a threaded wooden rod in the central pillar to allow for maintaining the flame's height to read or work by. There is an ejector slide within the candle stick to raise the candle when it has burned down and eventually eject the stub when it is beyond serviceable use. Dutch possibly... 1780-1820 perhaps, but I wouldn't bet a ha'p'ny on those suggestions (guesses)....

Hello Carl. Good to hear from you. You've got everything right save the nationality - they are English - candlestick, probably around the middle of the eighteenth century, candle stand
late eighteenth/ very early nineteenth century. The whole thing is known in the antique trade as a lacemaker's candle stand, but I think that anyone who wishes to read by candle light could do with all the help they can get, and this very adjustable arrangement would be a great help in those circs.
