Should have published the above photograph in yesterday's blog entry. It shows the reverse side of the 'mystery object'. I show it today to demonstrate to Crowbard that the object is no form of repousee work (that is, work hammered, or pushed up from the back). Hope this clarifies matters.

1740, lost wax casting, Austrian. Was used as ornamentation on a tea caddy lid.
Right, so it's ferrous! Possibly cast steel, more likely cut-steel. Possibly a butt-plate for a sporting gun? which would explain the wear-pattern where the gun had been regularly leaned in a corner, but the orientation of the scene is wrong for a butt-plate. Was the worn area once attached to a hinge? I think I can make out tiny rivet heads either end. So back to the C18th. box-lid idea!Dutch or German? To be honest I'm completely bamboozled.
No ideas but I've an inkling that Sporrans may be involved
Please can you make me one of these for my sixtieth??!!! X
