Last Thursday night our friend Hilary's freezer packed up during the night and the contents started to thaw. Ann met her on Friday morning, and Hilary told Ann about the problem and gave her a couple of pork chops. Ann, of course wanted to pay her for them but Hilary said she couldn't possibly take anything for them as a week or so previously our butcher had a 'buy one, get one free' offer on pork chops, so Hilary had bought four of them at those rates, and these were the two free ones.
We had them for supper this evening, mine being pictured above. It is at the top of the picture covered in apple and onion sauce, and accompanied by mashed potatoes, boiled celery, carrots, and red cabbage. They were delicious. There is another happy ending to the story. Hilary went to our Electrical Goods shop, where they very kindly lent her another freezer whilst hers is being repaired. Both Hilary and Ann are retired nurses, one having been a Matron, and the other a Senior Ward Sister, and they both agreed that it doesn't do to refreeze some things, and "You can't be too careful with pork !"

Myself once a much junior nurse to Anne and Hilary I also get twitchey about things in the freezer and hygiene in general.
Hello Pat. Yes, I suppose it's part of the nursing training. I know Ann is ultra-cautious about food. When our children were young if I hung game properly I'd probably have it to myself. Trying to hang game satisfactorily is a pretty good example of how impossible it is to please everyone.
A lovely looking meal Mike and Ann, but I can't help but notice your fork. Is that from a Community Silver Plate (now Oneida) set of Morning Star?
Hello Paff. Gosh, you've just made us excercise our memories. We started buying the cutlery when we got engaged in 1960. We could remember it was community plate, but only with Google's assistance have we been able to establish it's pattern as 'Morning Star'. When we married in 1963 an elderly great aunt gave us a canteen of cutlery; but, as Ann reminded me, we were never able to afford the knives in Community Plate (only spoons and forks). We were also given knives, as well as various other table silver, and Aunt Beth's canteen, so
we've never gone short of cutlery in the end.
How did you know what it was/ Do you have the same pattern.
Community Plate is one of my specialist areas. Morning Star and Hampton Court are my favourite designs. It is very popular in Australia and America. I have to confess ours is stainless steel so that it goes in the dishwasher, very boring!

If you only had forks and spoons you must have felt a bit cut up at meal times...
