Thursday.

On Tuesday morning, eldest daughter, Sarah, her husband Mikey, their daughter Lucy, and son Guy, came for an overnight visit. On Wednesday it was decided that we'd drive over to Sutton Hoo, and inspect the Anglo Saxon ship burial there. The top photo shows Lucy, thinly disguised as an Anglo Saxon warrior.

The above photo shows grandson Guy sturdily refusing pointblank to be disguised as anything. Quite right, too. People should remember how shy and sensitive we chaps are before trying to lure us into such unmanly charades!

After we got home, Lucy, armed with the usual grandfatherly tip, trotted into town, where there is a shop that makes superb sweetmeats, chocolates, etc., and purchased for her mother a quarter of a pound of kirsch soused, dark chocolate coated cherries. Above photo shows Sarah gloating over them.  They hit the road just after tea time yesterday.  A flying visit, but we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Have they agreed yet who was in the ship-burial at Sutton Hoo? If it was Rædwald(d.625) his 9 x great uncle was Hoernir Vili (Horner the wilful) a very remotely related legendary Hero.

Hello Z. Yes, I think she is.

Hello Crowbard. The archaeologists think it is Raedwald, perhaps/maybe. You know what confirmed fence-sitters archaeologists are!
Horner the Wilful ? Gosh, how the family has changed over the millenia!

(Irony !)

P.s. Z - lucky, that is, and deserves to be. Should have made that clearer.

Irony is most appropriate, Mike, even the mildest family members (i.e. The men-folk) can display a will of iron when needful!

I am drooling at the thought of kirsch soaked cherries in dark chocolate.

Did you like the visitor place at Sutton Hoo? Sir B and I visited about 6 years ago and were a bit underwhelmed.

Hello Liz. We, too, visited Sutton Hoo some years ago, and were a bit disappointed. It's better now than it was then, but I think that part of the problem is still that most of the interesting stuff that was found at Sutton Hoo is now in the British Museum, leaving the Suffolk Site with copies. We also looked round Mrs. Pretty's house, which is Very Edwardian (not my period) but I found meself enjoying it (to my surprise), so, in the end a pleasant visit.

Those chocolates would make a wonderful digestif.

They do indeed, Pat. But no excuse is needed for them.
