Monday.

Today is Ann's birthday, and  she accepted my offer to take her out to lunch. Before lunch though, we did a little shopping at our favourite farm shop. Then motored back to a newish restaurant a mile or so from home that we've been meaning to try for some time, having heard conflicting reports of it from friends. When we got back there it turned out that it is closed on Mondays!  Back in the car and motored the few miles to Kersey, where I'd taken the above and below photos a few days ago (before this last lot of snow), and to the Bell Inn (below) where a good, solid lunch is always to be got.  Except, that is, on Mondays, when it is closed.

Back in the car again, and motored back to our farm shop, where we both ordered the day's special, which was beef, soaked in Guinness, then roasted, served with vegetables, and gravy made from the Guinness in which the beef had been marinated.  An excellent, hearty meal it was, too. We had it at the table beside the wood- burning fire in the restaurant; and very welcome that was, too, on a bitter cold day. Well worth the roundabout journey. Mem; as Ann said - never have a birthday on a Monday. Although, as she also said, we couldn't have had a better meal at the new restaurant than we eventually had at the farm shop.
Goodnight All.

Happy birthday, Ann.

At least being closed on a Monday means that the standard isn't lowered on the chef's day off.

Thank you Rog.

And thank you, Liz. It was worth waiting for.

Thank you Zoe. Like your reasoning re Chef's day off - we hadn't thought of that.

Nice UFO flying over the Bell Inn Mike. It is unusual to see a photo taken from directly below showing their circular design. Where there any little green men dining with you at the Inn? They probably came from parsecs across the galaxy just to wish Ann a Happy Birthday.

This occurred when I was putting the machine through the process for reducing the number of pixels. I think perhaps I have inadvertently found the device for punching holes in 'bus tickets and activated it.

Yesterday was a popular day for birthdays then, belated congratulations to Ann. It was Ian's birthday too, I intend to write up a blog but suffice to say our day involved a meal out too, plus an art exhibition. He shares his birthday and age with a friend from his U3A art class and with Sir Elton John.

Hello Madeleine. Please wish Ian many happy returns of yesterday for us. I wonder if he and Ann were born in the same year? It would, of course, be ungallant to disclose Ann's age, but I have permission to tell you the year of her birth, which was 1940.

You do have some beautiful and interesting buildings in Suffolk. The Bell looks wonderful and a very tempting inn to quench one's thirst!

Hi Maggie. We must try it when you're next our way.

P.s. It's not as good as the Swan at Monk's Eleigh, but it's pretty reliable as a lunch spot.

Is the minor bird still there, or have I got the wrong pub?

Hope Mum's "card" has arrived?
One of the parcels I sent from England back home took 3 weeks to arrive, with a little label stuck on it: "missent to Thailand"!

Hello Nea. Yes, you've got the right pub - the Bell at Kersey. Odd little story coming up. We went back to Welney in 1977. When we came to live here in 1994, the first time we went out to Kersey, we went to the Bell, had lunch, and enquired after George the talking mynah bird. NOBODY remembered him !! I suppose he belonged to the landlord in 1977, and the pub probably changed hands a couple of time in the next 16 years, but I still found it odd that nobody remembered such a character as George.
No, Mama's card has not yet arrived, but given your Thailandish tale, that probably won't surprise you. It will be interesting to see what route the card takes! Good to hear from you.
Much love, the Parents.
