Wednesday.

The two above photos are of this week's mystery object. I've included a fifty pence coin to give some idea of size, although it is two and a half inches long. When and where was it made, and what is its purpose?  It has a quite specific one. I bought it this morning in a junk shop in the town centre.

Looks rather like a pipe tamper, Mike.

I'd guess made in Birmingham about the 1920s,Mike; latter into the 30s I would have expected a higher heel. It could be a seal, but I would need to see the face of the thigh section to be sure, or it could be a pin-box if the section above the garter is a screw-cap. It might be a prosthetic limb for a microscopic one-legged transvestite, but I don't know any that small. Wilder ideas occur but I will dismiss them as unlikely.

It's definitely a 50 pence piece dating from 1971

You never said a truer word Rog ~ to coin a phrase.

Hello Paul. I think you need to talk to Crowbard. He is the imaginative one of we two brothers. I am the Gradgrindian one; I like to think I deal in hard facts.

Hello Crowbard. The two photos were taken with the same item of pale brass on the same carpet in my cellar. Looking at them I can hardly believe the difference in colour. Sorry to have deceived you. No intention to have done so this time.

I'm so sorry Paul, he's very shy and doesn't want to discuss coming out of his cigar-box yet, at least not until he's found a microscopic silver stocking to match his prosthesis.

Hi Mike, it's a hard fact that lighting can make a big difference to photos, surprised you didn't notice and slightly concerned you weren't trying to make things trickier, hope you're feeling OK.
