Thursday.

Being a man, and perhaps even more, being an Englishman, I have difficulty expressing emotion. So I'm just going to put down facts. Ann's sister in law Erica (Ann's older brother's wife) has been in Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, for some weeks. Ann has known Erica since they were children. In their late teens, when both were in their first employment, they shared a bed- sitting room for a while. Erica married Mick when she was twenty. We married four years later. The four of us raised families, and now have grandchildren who are nearly grown up. We have always been good friends. Erica could always be relied on, and was, in every sense, a lovely person and a gentlewoman. She died at three a.m. this morning.

Dearly beloved brother and sister-in-law, please accept our deepest sympathies and heart-felt condolences for your great loss at Erica's passing. Kindly convey our loving thoughts to Mick C. and his family, also to Dorothy. Be gentle on yourselves, have a blub if you can. Erica was worth more than a passing tear but she would tease you gently for blubbing and have a tissue to hand in case you should need one. Let not your heart be troubled.

You have my deepest sympathy. I recall that you wrote about visiting her in the hospital some time ago.

Great Aunty Am-Erica, as she will be remembered by our children, will always be a part of me. Firm, but forgiving when we stepped out of line, yet still up for fun when we raced along the Littleport straight heading for the hump, all yelling "Faster, faster" on the back seat, until our heads made contact with the roof of the car. As one great niece in the out back of Australia said: "Rest in peace Aunty Erica"
