Friday 1.
Walking home this morning through Tinker's Lane when I spotted this very affectionate looking willow tree. I must have seen it many times before, but I'd never twigged how very fond it seems of every branch of its family. Or am I barking up the.........?

Thursday.
Photo taken through the back window of our kitchen. Slight frost this morning. Ann motored over to Wisbech to see her mother this morning, and is staying over. This afternoon walked into town and, with Hilary's assistance, completed setting up the bookstall. Whilst doing so talked to a married couple, tourists, from Alabama (in the Colonies, I believe). The husband told us he is a direct descendant of our local martyr, Dr. Rowland Tayler, who was burned at the stake here in 1553 (that Bloody Mary!!!!). Hilary took them off to show them Dr. Tayler's brass and window. They told us that this morning they'd asked a lady in the town if they could tell them where the site of the execution was, and she'd taken them to it and showed them the monument. Very sporting of her as it's a good mile out of town. There are two monuments on the site; one, done at the time of the martyrdom, a crudely engraved stone, and next to it a rather more formal affair put up in 1826. They said how kind people had been to them in town, but we owe Dr. Tayler (and, by extension, his descendants) a good deal, and, as I've probably said before, Suffolk people have long memories. Ascension Day service this evening, and, as usual, those of the choir who were physically able, climbed to the top of the Deanery Tower to sing the first hymn. Only three of our choir members were up to it this year, but we were joined by a few singers from nearby villages, so that about seven of us actually made it. The clocks are striking ten, and as I haven't yet eaten must go and do so. Good Night all.

Wednesday.
Above is another window shot, although this one was inspired (or at any rate influenced) by the 'reflection' photoes that daughter Nea used to specialise in.
Been a busy day. Up early because we were both reading a lesson at early service. Quick breakfast after the service, then I stayed on to continue setting up the book stall - almost done now, whilst Ann went and did some shopping in town. This afternoon Ann went off to help set up a 'Tea and musical' afternoon at a friend's house in aid of 'Christian Aid' (if that makes any sense). An hour later got a 'phone call from Ann - could I attend and bring kettle. Ann had made a fruit cake for the tea. Went, donated, bought raffle tickets, drank tea, ate walnut cake, made conversation, then adjourned to the music room, where our host, John, was giving a piano recital, which included some very well played Scott Joplin. I vaguely knew John was 'musical', had heard him play guitar very well, but had no idea he was such a good pianist. To hear ragtime played by a retired clergyman at the intended speed ('not fast' as Mr. Joplin wrote) was very unexpected, refreshing, and as the youngsters say 'cool'. Lovely half hour of music before I was detailed by Ann to drive home a very elderly neighbour, who had walked the mile uphill to the entertainment, but didn't really feel up to the walk home. Delivered her door to door, then home and spent a very pleasant couple of hours pottering in the workshop, until called to supper by Ann. Sausage pie, very good, Ann's own recipe, which she aught to write down, followed by bread and butter pudding. Nearly bedtime now, so - Goodnight All.

Tuesday 1.
This morning there was a ring on the back door bell just before eight a.m. It was our electrician come (by appointment- which Ann and I'd both forgotten) to fix me up light and power in the potting shed/forge. Fortunately, I was up, dressed, and about when he arrived (by a miracle). By a greater miracle, I heard the bell from my workshop, so I made him a coffee, and he got to work. He'd done the whole job by noon, and I was glad of it. I've been managing with an extension cable for the three and a half years since we've been here. It'll be nice to be able to work out there of an evening when necessary.
A week or so ago Lori Skoog, of the Skoog Farm Journal, put up some pictures of windows she'd taken photoes from and through, so I thought I'd have a try, and the above is one of them. Hope you don't mind me pinching your idea, Lori, or at least trying it.
Ann's booked us into a new discussion group this evening, and I've agreed to give it a try, so I must go and make meself decent for it. More later maybe, depending on what time it finishes.
Cheers, Mike.
